Uzbekistan: Membership of Human Rights Commission was updated
On December 26, the Legislative Chamber and the Senate of the Parliament adopted a joint resolution “On approval of the renewed list of the Commission on the observance of constitutional human rights and freedoms”. At the time of this publication, the text of the document wasn’t published on the official websites of the Oliy Majlis [the Senate].
Uzbek media reported the news with reference to the post on the social network of the chief technical adviser of the International Labor Organization in Uzbekistan, Jonas Astrup. In particular, the new members of the Commission are the leader of the Human Rights organization of Uzbekistan “Ezgulik” Abdurahmon Tashanov and the director of the Humanitarian Legal Center Shukhrat Ganiev.
The Parliamentary Commission is called upon to assist the Ombudsman in monitoring the observance of legislation on human rights and freedoms by state bodies, enterprises, institutions, organizations and officials. The International Labor Organization has repeatedly commended the government’s policy to eradicate forced labor.

In its “constructive dialogue” with the government, the organization ignores the reports from independent initiative groups about numerous cases of forced labor. At the same time, civic activists are allowed to monitor violations of the law, who are involved to cooperation by government agencies in accordance with their requirements.
Nadejda Atayeva, President of the Association “Human Rights in Central Asia”, commented on the message without optimism.
“It’s too early to applaud. It would be great to include independent human rights defenders in this Commission, and not those who accepted the conditions of power,” Atayeva said.
The general public is not aware of the results of the work of the previous membership of the Commission. Only the deputy corps was familiarized with the results of the work. The authors of the site “Satire” and the Telegram channel with the same name, in connection with this, asked the question sarcastically, “Did we have such a Commission?”
