Uzbekistan: an activist was detained for sympathizing with protesters in Kazakhstan

On January 9, at about noon, activist Daniyar Khudaibergenov was detained in the city of Chimbay (Karakalpakstan). Local law enforcement agencies demanded an explanation from him for publishing a post on a social network in support of peaceful protesters in Kazakhstan.

According to the opposition information center “Shirak”, he was first summoned to the city administration for a conversation. Then the officers of the District Department of Internal Affairs of Chimbay arrived and charged him with “sympathetic comments”. Nothing is known about the further fate of the activist.

On this day, a group of officers from the Prosecutor General’s Office arrived in Karakalpakstan. They participated in a closed meeting with representatives of the security forces. According to the oppositionists, “the Prosecutor General of Uzbekistan N. Yuldashev gave an order to arrest all the Karakalpaks who morally support the brotherly Kazakh people.”

Similar meetings of security officials were held in all regions of Uzbekistan, where the so-called strengthening of the work of the staff of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the state security service was announced. Informants and employees of mahalla committees are involved in the process.

Uzbek media reported that President Shavkat Mirziyoyev returned from a short vacation. On January 7, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces visited the Military Academic Lyceum “Temurbeklar Maktabi” under the State Security Service and Amir Temur State Security Academy.
