Turkmenistan: mass arrests of corrupt officials take place at state-owned enterprises

The media of Turkmenistan reported that large-scale checks of state-owned enterprises for involvement in corruption and fraudulent acts have begun in Lebap region.

Checks are carried out at the flour milling plant of Turkmenabad, refrigerating storages in the city of Turkmenabad, at Daihan bank and several other banks, at the warehouses of construction materials in Lebap region, at many points of the region for receiving cotton, at Lebapmive agro-industrial complex and at the oil and fat plant of Turkmenabad.

As a result of the investigative actions of the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Supreme Control Chamber of Turkmenistan, some leaders, accountants and warehouse managers of these enterprises were arrested. Many of the accused are under arrest, they are charged with corruption and abuse of power.

Products, intended for sale at discounted prices, were sold at dual market price. The proceeds from the difference went to the officials’ pockets. Also, the investigation established the involvement of employees of the law enforcement agencies of Lebap region in corruption schemes. At the cotton receiving points, the acceptance inspectors underestimated the grade of cotton, but they indicated the grade above in the documents.

The head of the oil and fat plant and his entourage sold cottonseed cake and residual cotton products at inflated prices, and appropriated the profit for themselves. The investigation continues.

It is worth recalling that Turkmenistan occupies the most recent positions in the reports of international human rights organizations on the level of corruption in the world.
