Tajikistan: 848 violations were detected in places of detention
About 4,500 checks were carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office in the criminal justice system in 2020. This was stated during a press conference by the Prosecutor General of Tajikistan, Yusuf Rahmon.
According to the Prosecutor General, as a result of inspections, acts of prosecutorial response were issued against 34 officials, criminal cases were initiated against 5 people. Rahmon didn’t specify on which articles the criminal cases were initiated.
It’s worth recalling that riots and escapes of prisoners systematically occur in the prisons of Tajikistan. According to international experts, the main reason for such phenomena is the harsh conditions in places of detention and systematic offenses by prison officials.

Commenting on the question of journalists regarding the development of the new Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan, a member of the working group on the development of the new Criminal Code, the head of one of the departments of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sharif Kurbonzoda, explained that the draft Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan is ready and submitted for consideration to the Executive Office of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan.
“The draft of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan in a new edition was prepared on behalf of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan. During its development, the opinions of legal scholars, international experts and representatives of civil society were studied. The draft of the new Criminal Code of the Republic of Tajikistan provides for humanization, mitigation of punishment for crimes committed by women, disabled or old people, and toughening for terrorism, grave and especially grave crimes,” Sharif Kurbonzoda said.
