Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan is the most corrupt agency

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan led the rating of the most corrupt government agencies in the country in the first quarter of 2020.

 The head of the Department of strategy and operational management under the Anti-Corruption Agency, Nurlan Zhaksimbetov, said that 70 employees of this department were held accountable for corruption in the reporting period. This was about 57% of the total number of officials, who were made answerable for corruption.

According to Zhaksimbetov, the Ministry of Ecology was in the second place in the ranking. There were 10 corrupt employees. The third place was divided between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Finance; both had 9 corrupt employees. The Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development was in the fourth place. 8 employees of the department were caught in corruption crimes.

As for the local government, the largest number of corrupt officials in the first quarter of this year was identified in the city halls of the East Kazakhstan, Zhambyl, Kyzylorda, Turkestan, Kostanai and Pavlodar regions.

At the same time, Zhaksimbetov noted that the level of corruption in the top management of state bodies has grown significantly. So every fourth corrupt official, who was brought to justice, was the head of a state body or quasi-state-owned company.

He also added that during the indicated period 417 persons were prosecuted for corruption crimes, 11 of which were heads of the republican level, 37 – of the region and 35 – of the city and district levels.
