Kyrgyzstan: woman in isolation was deprived of the opportunity to nurse her baby

In the temporary detention center of Kara-Buura district, the rights of the nursing mother were grossly violated. Human rights defenders drew up an act of violation and sent a corresponding appeal to the Prosecutor’s Office. This was reported at the National Center for the Prevention of Torture of the Kyrgyz Republic.

During a visit to the temporary detention center in the village of Kyzyladyr (Kara-Buura district), a woman, who is detained in this center, has filed a complaint with the heads of the territorial office of the National Center for the Prevention of Torture in Talas region.

She said that for 1.5 months she has been deprived of the opportunity to breastfeed her five-month-old baby.

“According to the applicant, at the beginning of her arrest, she was feeding the child for 1 month. Her parents brought her baby to feed. However, they don’t have the financial opportunity to bring the child to her every day. Because of this, the woman has chest pains. She didn’t complain to the administration of the temporary detention center, as she was ashamed to tell the men about it,” she said.

The National Center for the Prevention of Torture notes that according to the law of the Kyrgyz Republic “On the procedure and conditions of detention of persons who were detained on suspicion and charges of committing crimes” in the article 28 paragraph 2 “Features of detention of women”, suspected and accused women have the right to be with their children under the age of 3.

“This woman was deprived of the legal opportunity to nurse and be with her baby, and now she needs treatment. An act of violation was drawn up, an appeal was sent to the Prosecutor’s Office,” the National Center explained.
