Kyrgyzstan improved its position in the ranking of the Corruption Perception Index
Kyrgyzstan improved its position having risen by six points in the ranking over the year. This is evidenced by the results of the study for 2019, published recently by the International Organization Transparency International.
The report states that Eastern Europe and Central Asia are the second region with the lowest rates of Corruption Perception Index (CPI). According to the results of 2019, Kyrgyzstan scored 30 points out of 100 possible. The indicator was below the regional average, which, according to experts of Transparency International, is 35 points.
“Since 2012, Kyrgyzstan has significantly improved the Corruption Perception Index. However, it is still on the list of post-Soviet states that continue to experience state capture and inability to maintain a policy of checks and balances,” the document says.
Note that in the study of the organization, the degree of corruption is denoted by numbers from 0 to 100, where 100 is the complete absence of corruption, and 0 is the highest level of corruption.
Recall that in the Corruption Perception Index of Transparency International for 2018, Kyrgyzstan ranked 132nd (29 points). CPI estimates 180 countries and territories by their perceived level of corruption in the public sector based on expert assessments and surveys of business people.
Among the Central Asian countries, only Kazakhstan is ranked higher than Kyrgyzstan (114). The rest of the countries and regions are much lower: Tajikistan (156), Uzbekistan (157), Turkmenistan (167).
