Kyrgyzstan: 41 cases of convicts of the women’s colony No. 2 will be reviewed

The Ministry of Justice has launched a pilot project to provide legal assistance to imprisoned women in colony No. 2 as part of the humanization of penitentiary legislation.

Thus, on February 10, a group of lawyers from the Center for the Coordination of State-Guaranteed Legal Services visited women’s colony No. 2 in the village of Stepnoye.

“Lawyers provided legal assistance to 60 women; 41 cases of them are subject to review under the new Criminal Code. There is the possibility of reducing the terms of punishment,” the lawyers say.

Coordinators of the Center for the Coordination of State-Guaranteed Legal Services received applications from them for the provision of qualified legal assistance.

“Based on the results of the work, it was found that many convicts need help not only in the framework of their criminal case, but also in legal support on issues that arise outside the walls of the institution due to the impossibility of personal presence. For example, on issues of child custody, restoration of various kinds of documents or rights to property, and others,” the defenders emphasize.

The Ministry of Justice will continue to provide legal advice to convicted women in colony No. 2, and it is also planned to visit other colonies.

This project is being implemented in order to increase the level of legal protection of convicts, their legal education and ensure citizens’ access to justice, assistance in exercising their legitimate rights and interests.
