Kazakhstan: the number of corruption crimes has tripled

For two years, the Anti-Corruption Agency was able to prevent the theft of budget funds in the amount of $ 260 million.

According to the authorities, following on from the results of 6 months of 2020,  the number of registered especially grave corruption crimes has tripled compared to the same period in 2019. At the same time, for serious corruption crimes, the growth is 10%.

“The suppression of systemic corruption has increased by 22%. For the last six months, $ 82.3 million was reimbursed to the state treasury for corruption offenses, which is more than twice compared to the last year ($ 37.7 million). At the same time, in 2018-2019 and these 6 months, the court sentenced 1,096 bribes to fines, the amount of fines amounted to $ 21.3 million, ”the ministry said in a statement. According to anti-corruption officials, the average fine was $ 19.8 thousand, and the maximum fine for this period was $ 1.6 million, to which Baurzhan Yesmukhanov and Kanat Smagulov were sentenced on the fact of bribing in the case of the ex-minister of the national economy.

“In 2020, the largest fine of $ 1 million was imposed by the court on Kuatzhan Ualiev, the former executive secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. From 2018 to the present, the Anti-Corruption Service has prevented the theft and misuse of $ 260 million, ”the report concludes.
