Kazakhstan: detained activist went on a hunger strike
In Almaty, unidentified people in cits detained activists of the unregistered Democratic Party Abzal Dostiyarov and Alimzhan Izbasarov. This was announced by the leader of the Democratic Party Zhanbolat Mamay.
According to the lawyer Zhanar Balgabayeva, she became aware of Abzal’s detention at about 4 pm on July 14. However, it wasn’t immediately possible to find out where the policemen took the activist.
“Today I was finally able to see the guys,” Balgabayeva said. “It turned out that Abzal was detained by unknown people in cits, who refused to introduce themselves. Abzal has just submitted an official statement that he is going on a hunger strike. Most likely, he will be transferred to solitary cell.”
The lawyer also said that physical and mental pressure was exerted on Dostiyarov. The police officers demanded that he testify against Mamay.
“I cannot say that his health is now normal,” Balgabayeva noted. “Yesterday he was taken for examination. He has a concussion of the brain. His knee hurts. He feels sick.”
According to the lawyer, there was no reason for the detention of Dostiyarov, since at the rally he stood in a kettling and did nothing illegal.
Recall that after the rally on the birthday of the first President Nursultan Nazarbayev on July 6 in Almaty, when the police beat the protesters, several activists of the Democratic Party disap/wpal’s brother Dauren Dostiyarov. Subsequently, it became known that they were serving a 10-day administrative arrest in a pre-trial detention center in Almaty. The third activist, Valikhan Sultanov, was placed in a psychiatric clinic.
