In Kazakhstan, deputy mayor and rector of university are suspected of corruption

Despite the measures taken, the level of corruption in Kazakhstan continues to remain high. Every day there are reports that a particular civil servant has been implicated in a corruption crime. This time, the Anti-Corruption Agency of Kazakhstan became aware of two new facts.

The first case concerns the deputy mayor of the district “Almaty” of the city of Nur-Sultan. As noted in the Anti-Corruption Department, the official is suspected of receiving a bribe from the director of a private company for general patronage when signing acts of work performed under an agreement on public procurement of work to service the district’s lighting. The size of the bribe, according to anti-corruption fighters, amounted to about $13 000.

The name of the deputy mayor is not disclosed in the interests of the investigation.

The second corruption crime, which was detected by the Anti-Corruption Agency, occurred within the walls of Karaganda State University “KarGU”. According to the Anti-Corruption Agency, the rector of the university is suspected of giving a bribe to the chairman of the board of the corporate enterprise “Science Fund”, whose sole shareholder is the Science Committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Note that the name of the rector is also not called. However, on the university’s website it is indicated that its leader is Azamat Edrisov. The Anti-Corruption Department noted that the rector of the university gave a bribe of $5000 for a positive solution to the issue of financing research projects.

We also note that the Head of the Science Foundation Anuarbek Sultangazin was relieved of his post on July 16. Sultangazin pleaded guilty fully and actively cooperates with the investigation. In this regard, they did not detain him. The investigation against him is ongoing.
