Human rights activists of Tajikistan helped torture victims

For the first half of the year, 28 citizens, who were victims of torture, and their families underwent a rehabilitation course, according to the official statement by the Coalition of Civil Society Against Torture and Impunity in Tajikistan.

“15 cases of the total are repeated appeals,” the statement says. “13 people re-admitted for rehabilitation: 5 men, 6 women and 2 minor girls. 7 people of the total number of admissions are persons directly affected by torture and cruel treatment, the remaining 6 are relatives of the victims. All who applied for help were provided with social, medical and psychological assistance and support.”

Human rights activists note that physical torture was used against persons directly affected by torture: hand strokes at the head, beating with a truncheon, blows to the chest and throat, punches to the face, twitching the hair, blows to the head with a book, threats of rape. One woman has been sexually abused. Psychological torture was used against one male victim. As a result, he tried to end his life three times.

All the victims and their close relatives suffered psychological trauma. As a result, they had medical and psychological problems.

Meanwhile, Tajikistan’s Interior Minister Ramazon Rahimzoda, reporting on the activities of the Ministry to journalists, said that during 6 months of the current year there had not been a single case of torture. In general, for this period of time, according to the data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in Tajikistan, 12.549 crimes were registered.
