Former vice-mayor of Aktobe was arrested in Kazakhstan

The former vice-mayor of Aktobe, Zhangeldy Aubakirov, was arrested on suspicion of misappropriation or embezzlement of entrusted property of others on an especially large scale.

 According to the investigation team, which included employees of the National Security Committee, the Prosecutor’s office and the Anti-Corruption Agency, Aubakirov, in collusion with the city head of the department of housing and communal services, passenger transport and roads, Nurlan Dosov (now also former), appropriated more than $207 000, allocated from the city budget for the decoration of the city for the New Year holidays. At the same time, the city was decorated, but at the expense of local businessmen.

“On April 16, the Specialized Investigation court of Aktobe authorized the detention of Aubakirov for two months, that is, until June 15, 2020,” the court’s press service informed.

Zhangeldy Aubakirov was appointed vice-mayor of Aktobe in July 2019. Prior to this appointment, he held a similar post in the city of Aktau. Aubakirov also has experience in the Ministry of Transport and Communications, as well as in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As vice-mayor of Aktobe, Aubakirov supervised housing and communal services. He left this post a few days before his arrest.
