Fake news control in Kyrgyzstan will hit freedom of speech

In Kyrgyzstan, the Ministry of Culture took the initiative to adopt a resolution to control fake news. The decision was made at a round table on the protection of citizens from the influence of fake news.

“The danger of fake news lies in undermining people’s trust in professional journalism, democratic institutions, as well as complicating the activities of state bodies,” said Azamat Zhamankulov, Minister of Culture, Information and Tourism.

It is also reported that at the event along with the press secretaries of government agencies attended by media leaders and journalists, as well as representatives of media organizations.

“I heard that the Ministry of Culture came up with a similar initiative. But, our Union of journalists was not invited to discuss this issue. I already learned about it after the fact. As for the initiative itself, I believe that it is necessary to control fake news, but not by creating additional laws. In my opinion, it is necessary to increase the level of media literacy of the population and journalists, as well as develop people critical thinking. It will be much more effective,” Azamat Kasybekov, the Head of the Independent Union of journalists of Kyrgyzstan, said to ACCA.

He expressed concern that the Fake News Act could increase censorship in the country.

“It’s very difficult to find distributors of fake news in the same social networks or messengers. It is not clear how the authorities intend to monitor them and make them responsible. But such a law, if it is passed, will certainly affect journalists. Indeed, under the concept of fake, a lot can be brought. As a result, we can see regular lawsuits against the media. I, as the Head of the Independent Union of journalists, are against excessive regulation of this issue. I am sure that this initiative will hit on freedom of speech in the country,” the expert concluded.
