Coronavirus was detected in female colony in Kazakhstan

On April 26, a coronavirus infection was detected in the LA-155/4 female colony located in Almaty region in the village of Zhaugashty. A pregnant convict is infected.

According to the administration of the LA-155/4 colony, since the convict is in late pregnancy, she was repeatedly sent for examination to the Central District Hospital (CDH) of Ili district. This hospital was recently closed for quarantine, as coronavirus was detected there.

As soon as the administration of the female colony became aware of the closure of the Central District Hospital, the necessary measures were taken to isolate the pregnant convict from the rest of the prisoners.

“She had no symptoms. She had a usual temperature. She didn’t cough,” a source in the department of the penitentiary system in Almaty region told ACCA. “However, the colony administration decided to take precautions and isolated the convict. A separate ward was equipped for her in the medical unit on the territory of the colony. Before hospitalization, the convict was taken the necessary tests, which confirmed COVID-19. After that, the woman was hospitalized. All convicts, who contacted her, are isolated in the infectious isolation ward and undergo examination. In addition, all LA-155/4 employees are now checking for infection.”

The department of epidemiological surveillance of Ili district confirmed the information concerning the infection of the convict, adding that by decision of the chief sanitary officer of Ili district, the female colony was quarantined, and all the personnel of the correctional institution are in the barracks and deprived of the opportunity to leave the colony.
