Anti-corruption fighter is tried for a bribe in Kazakhstan
In Karaganda, the trial began of Daniyar Kimbekov who is the former Head of the Operational Management Department of the Department of the Anti-Corruption National Bureau of Karaganda region.
According to investigation, in June 2018, Kimbekov extorted 30.000 dollars from the famous businessman Zhandos Shokhin, whose company was engaged in the construction of a water supply system in Zhezkazgan. However, before transferring money to the anti-corruption fighter, Shokhin first turned to the National Security Committee and wrote a statement.
The transfer of money took place in the car of Kimbekov. However, he was not caught in the fact, because the anti-corruption fighter escaped the scene of the crime. Kimbekov’s car was later found in the steppe. Certainly, there was no money in it. This fact did not allow the investigation to confirm the receipt of a bribe and Kimbekov’s case was re-qualified as fraud.
In September 2018, the investigation was completed, and the case should have been brought to trial. Nevertheless, the senior prosecutor of the Karaganda regional prosecutor’s office, Abai Ualibekov, stopped the proceedings in the case of the anti-corruption fighter for the lack of legally defined crime in his actions.
However, the Internal Security Directorate of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Karaganda region did not agree with this decision and lodged a protest to the Prosecutor General’s Office. But the Prosecutor General’s Office did not support the protest.
After the media wrote about this story, the Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan Gizat Nurdauletov at the end of March, 2019 canceled the decision to terminate the criminal case against Kimbekov and re-directed it to the interdepartmental investigative-operational group to organize pre-trial proceedings. As a result, Kimbekov stood trial.
As a preventive punishment, he is not allowed to leave the country. If the court will prove his guilt, Kimbekov will face a fine or imprisonment for up to two years with confiscation of his property.
