Kazakhstan is launching the introduction of another method of combating corruption. This time, international quality standards for organizations and enterprises are taken as a basis. This is ISO 37001 standard.
As noted on the website of the International Organization for Standardization, ISO 37001 is a standard of the anti-bribery management system.
“ISO 37001 contains a number of measures to prevent and detect cases of bribery. These measures include the development of anti-corruption policies, the appointment of a responsible person for anti-corruption activities, training, risk assessment and legal assessment of projects and business partners, financial and commercial control, reporting and investigation procedures. The standard is intended to support the implementation of anti-corruption management systems and strengthen ongoing control. It also helps to reduce the risk of bribery and demonstrates to interested parties your intention to implement anti-corruption control systems,” the explanation of the standard says.
Meanwhile, as reported by the Ministry of trade and integration of Kazakhstan, any company that implements the anti-corruption standard ISO 37001, receives the status of “respectable company”, which will increase its credibility among European partners and, therefore, competitiveness.
“The Kazakh standard 3049 – 2017, which is completely identical to the international standard ISO 37001, has already fully entered into practice,” the Ministry said. “Since 2020, the National Accreditation Center will begin accrediting management system certification bodies, thereby empowering them to introduce the anti-corruption standard in Kazakh companies and organizations.”
At the same time, it is noted that the employees of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of Kazakhstan and specialists of certification bodies will be responsible for checking the compliance of companies with the anti-corruption standard. Especially for them, the author of ISO 37001 standard, Vanessa Harrison, was invited to Kazakhstan. She held the training seminar.
The Ministry emphasizes that Vanessa Harrison is one of the best experts in the world who has developed many modern standards and certifications, including the British anti-corruption standard.
According to the Vice Minister of trade and integration of Kazakhstan Kairat Torebaev, who participated in the seminar, ISO 37001 can be implemented in any organization, regardless of the scale of activity, and also regardless of whether this organization is private, public or belongs to the voluntary sector.
“The standard is intended to support the implementation of anti-corruption management systems and strengthen ongoing monitoring. It also helps reduce the risk of bribery and demonstrates to stakeholders your intention to implement anti-corruption control systems,” Torebaev emphasized.
