Turkmenistan: vacationers asked to leave the hotels due to the COVID-19 outbreak

In the resort area of Avaza, vacationers are being forcibly evicted from hotels. According to independent media outlets, in the city of Turkmenbashi, visitors from other regions of Turkmenistan are being forced out.

The reason for the closure of the resort area was COVID-19, namely its delta version. Vacationers express dissatisfaction with the actions of local authorities, as they spent a lot of money on obtaining permits and travel expenses. In addition, most come to rest in Avaza under duress. Vouchers are handed over to state employees at enterprises on a compulsory basis with the threat of dismissal. When checking out, hotels do not refund money for the remaining days, the entire amount will be gone.

As we found out, almost all hotels in Avaza were closed, hotel employees were fired. According to Radio Azatlyk, over 1,500 hotel employees from various service sectors have been terminated. The majority of hotel workers are visitors from other regions of the country, and due to the imposed restrictions on movement between regions of the country, many laid-off hotel employees and citizens on vacation cannot return to their homes. The authorities are not trying to help citizens in any way.

In early August, the situation with vacationers was the same, but then the reason for the eviction from the hotels was the large family of President Berdymukhamedov, who had come for vacation.

The city of Turkmenbashi is located 12 kilometers from the resort area. It turned out that the police were conducting raids in this city on all hotels and evicting guests. At the moment, the city of Turkmenbashi and the Avaza resort area has been almost completely cleaned out and closed for quarantine.
