Turkmenistan: activist, who was abducted by the authorities, is in detention

Ismatullayeva Khursanai Rakhmetovna, a former doctor of the perinatal center “Ene Myakhri” in the city of Gokdepe, was abducted from her home and taken away by the security forces in an unknown direction on July 16. She was held in the temporary detention center of the police of Bezmein district in Ashgabat. This was reported by independent sources from Turkmenistan.

It turned out that Ismatullayeva was transferred to the pre-trial detention center of the Ministry of National Security. She is being held in the basement of the detention center at the moment. Police and prosecutors have hastily fabricated a criminal case against Ismatullayeva Khursanai within two weeks, and a trial will take place in the coming days.

The abducted doctor is accused of fraud in the sale of the apartment of Vyacheslav, a disabled person who broke his leg and was looked after by Khursanai. The apartment was sold for $ 20,000, and Khursanai received about $ 700 as payment for caring for a disabled person. Also, the officers of the Ministry of National Security interrogated the neighbors and friends of the doctor. The employees of the Ministry of National Security were interested in what criminal sins Khursanai had committed.

Ismatullayeva was abducted from her home and taken away in an unknown direction after Ismatullayeva’s case was mentioned at the conference “Practices of suppression in Central Asia: the voices of human rights defenders” on July 15.

Khursanai Ismatullayeva worked at the perinatal center “Ene Myakhri” in the city of Gokdepe. In 2017, she was illegally dismissed from her position because she refused to prescribe unnecessary expensive procedures to her patients. Neither appeals to the Prosecutor’s Office, nor complaints to the court yielded any results. She couldn’t get a job in any state medical institution. Her dismissal was formalized under an unspoken brutal article of the Labor Code of Turkmenistan.
