Kazakhstan: civil activist got a prison sentence

In Kazakhstan, the trial of the activist Erbol Yeskhozhin, accused under the political article 405 of the Criminal Code “Organization and participation in the activities of a public or religious association or other organization after a court decision on the prohibition of their activities or liquidation in connection with their implementation of extremism or terrorism”, has ended in Kazakhstan.

As ACCA has already reported, Erbol Yeskhozhin was persecuted for his participation and calls for participation in peaceful protests, reposts of publications of the human rights movement “Veritas” on the collection of humanitarian aid for the families of political prisoners and public congratulations to Mukhtar Ablyazov (a convicted opposition politician and fugitive banker in Kazakhstan, currently abroad) on his birthday.

Despite the hopes of friends and associates that Yeskhozhin would get off with a suspended sentence or a fine, the judge of the District Court of Saryarka No. 2 Sabyrzhan Karimov considered that the activist’s guilt was fully proven and sentenced him to two and a half years in prison. In addition, according to the verdict of the court, Yeskhozhin was prohibited from engaging in social and political activities, participating in rallies and using social networks for five years.

Yeskhozhin himself didn’t admit his guilt and, moreover, said that he didn’t regret his actions at all.

Meanwhile, according to one of Yeskhozhin’s associates, civil activist Aydar Mubarakov, Erbol Yeskhozhin will get married next Friday.

“I want to share the good news. Our batyr Erbol has proposed marriage to the beautiful Elvira Urazova. On Friday, Allah willing, their marriage will be registered. Be happy! You are suited to each other,” Mubarakov wrote on social networks.
