Kyrgyzstan: Askar Akayev was brought to Bishkek for interrogation in Kumtor case

As part of a criminal investigation into corruption during the implementation of Kumtor project, the former president of the country, Askar Akayev, was put on the wanted list by an interdepartmental investigation group. Today, he was taken to Bishkek for interrogation. This was announced by the State Committee for National Security.

It’s specified that Mr. Akayev, along with other former high-ranking officials, was prosecuted for corruption during the conclusion of the General Agreement on the project of Kumtor in 1992, amending it in 1994, as well as during the restructuring of the General Agreement with the company “Cameko” in 2003.

Thus, the investigation gave a legal assessment to all the perpetrators involved in corruption in the implementation of the project of Kumtor during the presidency of Askar Akayev.

At the same time, the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic carried out active work during the investigation aimed at restoring historical justice in terms of bringing Mr. Akayev to criminal responsibility by bringing the latter to the territory of the republic.

Thus, as a result of measures taken by the State Committee for National Security, on August 2, former President Askar Akayev was taken to Bishkek, and he was immediately transferred to the Interdepartmental Investigation Group.

“At present, Askar Akayev is in the building of the State Committee for National Security, where he is participating in the necessary investigative actions within the framework of the criminal case on the deposit “Kumtor”. The State Committee for National Security will additionally inform the public about the results of the investigative actions and the procedural decisions taken on it, including in relation to Mr. Akayev,” the State Committee for National Security said.
