Turkmenistan: power structures took away former doctor in an unknown direction

According to an independent source from Turkmenistan, on the evening of July 16, doctor Khursanai Ismatullayeva was taken away from her home in an unknown direction.

According to the source, about 10 people came for her late in the evening. Some of them were in civilian clothes, others in police uniforms. Unknown persons confiscated all IT equipment and telephones available at Ismatullayeva’s house. Until now, there is no information about her.

Khursanai Ismatullayeva was detained immediately after mentioning her case at an online meeting organized by the MEPs “Oppression practices in Central Asia: Voices of human rights defenders”.

Ismatullayeva Khursanai Rakhmetovna is a former doctor of the Perinatal Center “Ene myakhri” in the city of Gokdepe (Akhal region). In 2017, she was illegally fired for refusing to take bribes from patients and send them to unnecessary paid examinations and surgeries. Ismatullayeva has been seeking justice for the illegal dismissal from the Center “Ene myakhri” for the past four years.

ACCA continues to monitor further developments.
