A group of activists and public figures appealed to the mayor’s office of the city of Nur-Sultan with a request to allow them to hold a rally on June 25, demanding the dismissal of the chairman of the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan, Zhakip Asanov.
A press conference was held at the headquarters of the organizing committee of the unregistered people’s party “El Tiregi”, at which it was said that an initiative group of 25 people was in the building of the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan, demanding a personal surgery with the chairman of the Supreme Court, Zhakip Asanov.
“The unjust decisions prompted our citizens to go to the Supreme Court,” lawyer Victoria Mamedova said at the press conference. “We are not allowed to the cassation instance. We went to the Supreme Court for an Open House two years ago. The judges of the Supreme Court, who considered our complaints in our cases, came to the conclusion that there were indeed violations in the cases and advised us to apply to the cassation instance. They promised us to claim these cases and reconsider them. But in the upshot, we received only formal replies that we have no grounds for demanding a review of the cases. On May 16, I again came to the reception of the judges of the Supreme Court. Once again, they confirmed that there are violations. And again they promised to claim the cases and reconsider them. We returned home and received the same replies again. Why then did they promise us to reconsider the cases? The judges of the Supreme Court themselves forced people to come here and spend the night outside the building of the Supreme Court, demanding a personal meeting with the chairman. We don’t require anything extraordinary. We just want Asanov to receive us and carefully consider our cases.”
The deputy chairman of the organizing committee of the party “El Tiregi”, Vadim Kuramshin, also said that he has been trying to get a personal meeting with Asanov for two years, but also unsuccessfully.
“Asanov just strikes at people’s faith in law and justice,” says Kuramshin. “He ignores the requests of the people to go out to them, to receive them in the building of the Supreme Court,” Madina Kuketayeva noted in her turn. “And in the building of the Supreme Court, there is a schedule that the chairman meets with people at least once a month. However, he sees no need to meet with the initiative group. And we have no choice but to initiate a rally. People go to Asanov during 15 years and cannot get to see him. It feels like he is a god, not a man. But Asanov is just a civil servant who receives a salary from our taxes! And he must receive people who turn to him for help in their search for justice. If the mayor’s office of Nur-Sultan allows us to hold a rally, we urge all Kazakhstanis to join it, because, I think, every family in Kazakhstan faced illegal court decisions, but not every family decided to go all the way.”
If the mayor’s office of Nur-Sultan doesn’t allow to hold the rally, then, according to Kuketayeva, the decision to hold an already unauthorized rally will be taken by the initiative group awaiting the meeting with Asanov in the building of the Supreme Court. “We ask all the people of Kazakhstan to support us,” Asanova said.
In turn, Askar Omar noted that the reason that prompted 25 people to occupy the building of the Supreme Court was the requirement of objectivity in the cases of their relatives.
“This is their constitutional right,” says Omar. “The people have practically no trust in the judiciary. Our research has shown that 95 % of the population doesn’t trust the judicial system. Where did this mistrust come from? Because our judges are corrupt, they have low moral and volitional qualities. Everyone, who has come across the judicial system, knows this. It’s sad but true. I think that what needs to be achieved is not a meeting of the initiative group of citizens with the chairman of the Supreme Court, but a meeting between the President of Kazakhstan and the chairman of the Supreme Court. I believe that Mr. Asanov should resign, and he must do it as soon as possible.”
