Kyrgyzstan: brother of ex-President was detained in corruption case

The State Committee has detained the deputy of Parliament Asylbek Jeenbekov, the brother of the ex-President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov.

On May 31, Asylbek Jeenbekov was summoned for interrogation to the State Committee for National Security as part of an investigated criminal case on corruption at various stages of the project to develop the deposit of Kumtor. Following the interrogation, he was detained.

Earlier, after the interrogation in this case, the former Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Omurbek Babanov was detained.

“Based on the evidence obtained during the investigation, on May 31, 2021, ex-Prime Minister Babanov was detained on suspicion of committing a crime under article 319, part 2 “Corruption” of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic,” the State Committee for National Security reported.

On May 17, the State Commission for verification of the activities of Kumtor Gold Company, a subsidiary of Centerra Gold Inc., revealed a number of violations. During the publicity of the results of the inspection, the members of the State Commission announced that some high-ranking officials lobbied the interests and patronized the foreign company for remuneration.
