Kyrgyzstan: ex-Prime Minister Babanov was detained in corruption case

In the case of Kumtor, the State Committee for National Security summoned the former Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Omurbek Babanov for questioning. Following the interrogation, he was detained.

It’s specified that he will be interrogated in the case of Kumtor deposit.

On May 17, the State Commission for verification of the activities of Kumtor Gold Company, a subsidiary of Centerra Gold Inc., revealed a number of violations. In particular, according to members of the State Commission, the company has been evading payment of mandatory taxes for many years, and has also violated a number of environmental laws of the republic. We are talking about the storage of dumps from gold production on the glaciers Davydov and Lysy, which led to their partial destruction.

In addition, during the publicity of the results of the inspection, the members of the State Commission announced that certain high-ranking officials lobbied the interests and patronized the foreign company for remuneration.

It’s worth adding that the State Committee for National Security will also interrogate a member of the Parliament, the brother of former President Sooronbai Jeenbekov, Asylbek Jeenbekov. This was reported by sources in law enforcement agencies.
