Human rights activist of the movement “One World – Kyrgyzstan” Tolekan Ismailova claims that life-sentenced human rights activist Azimzhan Askarov is very sick.
According to her, he practically cannot see and does not hear, he has sore joints, he practically cannot move independently.
“The conditions in our prisons are terrible. Prisoners do not have access to normal treatment. Among the drugs in prisons, there are only aspirin and analgetic,” said Tolekan Ismailova.
The human rights activist emphasizes that their organization has been talking about Askarov’s worsening state of health for many years, but no one is listening to them.
“We say that Askarov is sick, and the prison doctors write that he is healthy. If he is healthy, then why, when he was brought to Bishkek for trial, he was not placed in colony No.1, but in hospital-colony No.47? Because he was a victim of torture. He was beaten and would have been killed if the courts had not been transferred him to Bishkek,” Ismailova emphasized.
Tolekan Ismailova believes that Azimzhan Askarov cannot be held in the colony and needs constant medical supervision.
Meanwhile, at the request of the Kyrgyz media about the state of Azimzhan Askarov, the State Penitentiary Service (SPS) was informed that he was receiving the necessary treatment. Moreover, the State Penitentiary Service said that no one had contacted them about the hospitalization of the life-sentenced human rights activist Azimzhan Askarov.
Recall that Azimzhan Askarov was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2011 by the Jalal-Abad Regional Court for inciting ethnic hatred and killing a policeman during the June events in the South of the Kyrgyz Republic in 2010. Against the verdict, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International organizations, ombudsman Tursunbek Akun and a number of human rights defenders spoke out. As for today, Azimzhan Askarov has been sentenced to life imprisonment by all judicial instances of Kyrgyzstan.
