Uzbekistan: prisoner tried to commit suicide

On May 4, 2021, prisoner Suren Muratov cut his hands and stomach while trying to commit suicide in the colony-settlement No. 35 (Sheikhali village in Kashkadarya region). This was reported by human rights activist Elena Urlaeva. She is sure that the rude attitude of the penitentiary staff, poor-quality food and fabrication of various violations of the regime possibly caused suicide.

According to the activist, Muratov and other prisoners are constructing multi-storey buildings in the regional center of Karshi. The head of the colony, Lieutenant Colonel Shavkat Toshev, receives money for their work.

“Suren Muratov didn’t get the proper help. He lost a lot of blood. Now, they hide him from doctors and checks,” says Urlaeva. “Lieutenant Colonel Shavkat Toshev is blackmailing Suren Muratov, persuading him to take the blame.”

Earlier, ACCA wrote about a strange case of a prisoner’s suicide in Kashkadarya region. The suicide of Sh. Azamov on March 26 caused deep distrust of his relatives. The case received publicity; the Senate Committee on Judicial and Legal Issues and Anti-Corruption became interested in it, they called it “mysterious”. The senators even asked the Ministry of Internal Affairs to make an official statement on the results of its investigation.

The prisoner hanged himself inside the warehouse of production facility of the colony No. 2 using a telephone cable. The relatives of the deceased examined the body and immediately suspected a fake suicide. They demanded to conduct a second examination, which was firmly refused. The day before, the prisoner was waiting for his transfer to the colony-settlement in Namangan region, and in a conversation with his parents two days before the incident, he was clearly not motivated to leave this life.
