Kazakhstan: judge of Supreme Court was detained for bribe

On February 11, the Anti-Corruption Agency, together with employees of the Internal Security Department of the Supreme Court, arrested the judge of Supreme Court Meiram Zhanguttinov.

According to Kazakh newspaper “Vremya” [“Time”], citing its sources, the judge is suspected of accepting a bribe of $ 8,000.

Zhanguttinov Meiram Kurmashovich was elected a judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan by the resolution of the Senate on May 30, 2014. He is a member of the Judicial Collegium for criminal cases of the Supreme Court.

Meiram Zhanguttinov began his career as a music teacher at a secondary school. After graduating from the Law Institute of Sverdlovsk named after R.A. Rudenko, Zhanguttinov became an investigator of the Prosecutor’s Office in one of the districts of Pavlodar region.

In 1996, he was appointed a judge of the East Kazakhstan Regional Court.

He was the chairman of the collegiums for criminal cases of the East Kazakhstan Regional Court, and then Akmola Regional Court.

In 2010, Zhanguttinov was appointed a chairman of the Specialized Inter-District Criminal Court of Astana.

In 2014, he was elected a judge of the Supreme Court. In 2019, by the decree of the first President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, he was appointed a member of the Supreme Judicial Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

It is noteworthy that Zhanguttinov is also a professor at the Academy of Justice at the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan. In September 2019, by the decision of the Academic Council of the Academy of Justice under the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan, he was awarded the title of “Honorary Professor of the Academy”.

It’s worth recalling that this is not the first detention of a judge on a large bribe since the beginning of the year. Just recently, in Karaganda, the judge of the Specialized Inter-District Economic Court, Yerzhan Gabdullin, was detained red-handed while receiving $ 30,000.
