Turkmenistan: authorities intend to expand prison territory

The government of the country has decided to expand the territory of prisons and increase places by 30% in each colony.

According to an ACCA source, close to the Department of Punishment Execution of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkmenistan, the authorities made such a decision in 2018, but this information was not advertised anywhere, and the authorities themselves officially deny it.

At the same time, the authorities of Turkmenistan don’t allow international observers to enter the Turkmen colonies and hide the exact number of prisoners.

For example, in the general regime colony LB-K-12 located in Seydi city (Lebap region), the number of places has already been increased from 1200 to 1600. At the same time, the number of prisoners in this colony always exceeds 2000. In some years, the number of prisoners in this colony reached 4500 people.

ACCA’s source said that at the moment there are about 35,000 prisoners in Turkmen prisons, and this is 3 times more than the entire penitentiary system of Turkmenistan can accommodate at present. Construction in the colonies was planned to be completed by the end of 2025, but the pandemic and economic crisis have made adjustments to the government’s plans. After the completion of the construction of new barracks, the country’s prisons will simultaneously be able to accept up to 47,000 prisoners.

It’s worth recalling that the population of Turkmenistan is about 3.5 million people.
