Turkmenistan: Berdymukhamedov pardoned 2,082 convicts

In honor of the 25th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s neutrality, the President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov signed the Decree pardoning 2,082 convicts, 4 of them are citizens of foreign states.

However, the law enforcement officers are dissatisfied with these pardons, and see this as only PR on the part of the President, since unemployment in the country is 60%, the economic and food crises have lasted for the last 5 years.

The pardoned people have nowhere to work and nothing to live on. So, more than half of those pardoned return back to prison for committing plunder, robbery and theft.

It’s worth noting that Turkmenistan ranks third in the world in terms of the number of convicts per hundred thousand citizens. This year, 4,296 people were released on pardon.
