Turkmenistan: a suspect of connections with a foreign opposition was sentenced to 6 years

The trial of the lawyer of the state oil and gas production company “Balkanneft”, Pigambergeldy Allaberdiyev, was held behind closed doors. The trial took place on September 29 in a pre-trial detention center in Balkanabat city. Allaberdiev was sentenced to 6 years in prison in a trumped-up case.

The court found him guilty under the articles 279 (hooliganism) and 108 (intentional moderate harm to health) of the Criminal Code of Turkmenistan. The hearing concerning the case of Allaberdiyev was scheduled for 10 am on September 29 in the city court. The relatives and friends of the defendant gathered near the court building, but later it became known that the trial was postponed to 16:00 and would be held in the building of the city jail. The trial began at 18:00 and ended at 20:00. The relatives of the defendant and even the witnesses in this case, whose testimony could have refuted the accusation, were not admitted to the hearing.

After the trial, the investigator Kummet Ilyasov left the pre-trial detention center through another exit under guard. The relatives don’t know the details of the trial and whether the defendant was provided with a lawyer at all. The fact is that Allaberdiyev’s relatives couldn’t hire a lawyer for the reason that all lawyers refused to defend Allaberdiyev due to the politicization of the case and that it is under the control of Ashgabat.

The special services of Turkmenistan suspect Allaberdiyev of connections with the protest movement outside Turkmenistan. Let us remind you that Allaberdiyev was arrested on September 5 in the city of Balkanabat on the false charges of hooliganism and bodily harm.
