Kazakhstan: another mayor caught on a bribe

Kazakhstani fighters against corruption have identified another bribe-taker among officials. This time, the mayor of Ayagoz, a small town with a population of over 73 thousand people located in the East Kazakhstan region, came to the attention of the anti-corruption department.

The name of the bribe-taker in the interests of the investigation was not disclosed. However, it is known that since July 2019, Kuanysh Azikhanov, born in 1964, was in the chair of the mayor of Ayagoz. Previously, he was the mayor of the rural district.

According to information provided by the anti-corruption agency, Azikhanov is suspected of taking a large bribe of $ 2.8 thousand. The mayor received money from a private entrepreneur for signing acts of completion under a public procurement agreement. According to our information, we are talking about the construction of two 60-apartment buildings in Ayagoz within the framework of the state program Nurly Zhol, which were to be commissioned this year. The total cost of the two buildings is about $ 2 million.
