Turkmenistan: authorities prepare to suppress popular protests

The Turkmen opposition outside the country is calling on the people of Turkmenistan for massive protests. The authorities imposed an unspoken curfew in the country.

According to information coming from Turkmenistan, it became known that the country’s authorities are strengthening security measures. Additional reserves of riot police units are being pulled into Ashgabat, and all power structures of the country have been transferred to an enhanced mode of operation. Riot police officers are undergoing intensive training in special centers to disperse protesters, the security forces have already been given resources to disperse street demonstrators – these are pepper gas cans, stun batons, weapons for firing rubber bullets. Turkmenistan bought all this from Russia.

Riot police officers will remain in the capital until the end of September. In the capital, cities, and regional centers, the police check passports and residence permits, an unspoken curfew has been introduced. Also, throughout the country, the Internet is jammed, communication is extremely unstable, the signal disappears for several hours and the network bandwidth is 20-30 kb/s.

ACCA sources report that signalmen are jamming the network by order of the Ministry of National Security. Also, the special services increased pressure on friends and relatives of those who take an active part in the protest movement outside of Turkmenistan.

All these measures were taken by the country’s leadership since activists of the protest movement organized actions in the United States, Turkey, and Cyprus.

Now activists are calling on the population to protest inside the country from September 14 to 25. The protesters demand the resignation of President Berdymukhamedov, the country’s government, and the prevention of changes to the country’s Constitution.
