Turkmenistan: arrests of citizens dissatisfied with the authorities continue

According to ACCA sources, Pigamberdy Allaberdiyev, a lawyer of the Balkannebit department of the Ministry of Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan, was detained and arrested in the city of Balkanabat. Earlier in a private conversation, he criticized the country’s authorities.

He was arrested on Saturday, 5 September, at about 7 pm local time, when Allaberdyev left the store, an unknown young man approached him and tried to provoke a fight. Immediately a police squad appeared at the scene of the conflict. The attacker pointed to Allaberdiyev and accused him of the attack and immediately left the scene. Allaberdyev tried to explain the situation, but he was immediately taken to the police station.

After a while, officers of the Ministry of National Security entered the office in which Allaberdiyev was, and charged him in having links with activists of the protest movement abroad.

An ACCA source said that Allaberdyev was arrested a few days after he expressed his dissatisfaction with what was happening in the country at one of the events where he was invited as a guest. Also, starting from that day, 24-hour surveillance was installed after his house and himself, Allaberdiev’s phone was immediately tapped.

Against the background of protests by activists outside of Turkmenistan and calls for the people to rebel against the tyranny of Berdymukhamedov, the country’s authorities have tightened control in the information space. They are trying in every possible way to prevent the spread of protest sentiments in the country, the special services are strengthening control in all areas and exerting unprecedented pressure on dissidents. Activists abroad are citing September 14 as a possible date for peaceful protests. On this day, 2006, civil activist Ogulsapar Muradova died after being tortured in Ovadan-Depe prison, where she was illegally detained for criticizing the regime.
