Kazakhstan: bribe-giver sues journalist who made his name public

Kazakhstani corrupt officials not only love money, but also care about the purity of their reputation. This is evidenced by the unique situation that has arisen in the West Kazakhstan region.

Lukpan Akhmedyarov, a well-known journalist and editor of the Uralskaya Nedelya newspaper was prosecuted under Article 147, Part 5 Violation of privacy and personal data legislation.

The most interesting thing is that the case was initiated based on a statement by a businessman from Atyrau who bribed a policeman at $ 1200.

The background is as follows: on July 23, officers of the National Security Committee detained Police Major Askar Serikov in the village of Zachagansk, on the third kilometer of the Uralsk-Saratov highway, in his own Hyundai Sonata car, at the moment when a bribe was handed to him.

It turned out that the Atyrau businessman wanted to employ four citizens of Uzbekistan in his company. The 39-year-old major agreed to help in this matter and, moreover, to provide further patronage for a symbolic $ 1200.

The businessman did not want to pay and turned to the National Security Committee. On the same day, after receiving a bribe, the career of the major, who served as the commander of a special separate group to combat illegal migration, ended.

However, the businessman, instead of rejoicing in the victory over the corrupt official, decided to file an application against journalist Lukpan Akhmedyarov, who, reporting on this high-profile case, made public the name of the entrepreneur and the name of his company.

It should be noted that Lukpan Akhmedyarov was awarded the prestigious international Peter Makler Prize in October 2012. This award is presented by journalists from different countries for honesty and courage in publishing materials.
