Uzbekistan: blogger from Sokh and 12 of his compatriots taken into custody

Residents of Sokh, an Uzbek exclave in Kyrgyzstan, were detained from 22 to 25 August. According to some reports, the number of people taken by helicopter to the country is already more than 40.

On August 25, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Uzbekistan announced that six residents of Sokh had been taken into custody; criminal cases were opened against them on suspicion of organizing mass riots and resistance to representatives of the authorities.

The residents were especially offended by the 10-day arrest of Dadakhon Khaidarov, the administrator of the channel on the social network, who is the only blogger in Sokh.

The father of the blogger Sherali Khaidarov claims that he does not know whether or not a criminal case has been initiated against his 22-year-old son.

“It turns out that the son chose a lawyer appointed by the state,” he told reporters of the Uzbek service of Radio Svoboda. “I have repeatedly asked this lawyer:“ Ask my son about his state of health, examine his body, if there are any signs of beatings on his body. The lawyer told me that my son was not beaten, but he was crying. They don’t give us any information, to be honest, and it worries me a lot. ”

To mitigate the consequences of the incident on the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border, Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulla Aripov visited Sokh on June 1. The blogger asked the head of government to solve several isolation problems and to remove the head of the Fergana region, Shukhrat Ganiev.

On August 25, residents of the two countries clashed near the exclave due to a dispute over the use of the spring. The clash involved at least a thousand people. The head of the Fergana region, Shukhrat Ganiev, then did not support the inhabitants of the exclave. In contrast, he threatened to block their exit to Uzbekistan. After that, residents began to insult Ganiev. They threw stones at him and the former head of the Sokh region, Tavakkal Rakhimov.

As ACCA previously wrote, some online publications deleted articles about the conflict between the local population and Shukhrat Ganiev on June 2. The odious leader promised to erase Sokh from the map. Residents of the area were furious at the threats of the governor in their address. They demanded his resignation, protesting against disregard for socio-economic problems. Information about this remained available to users for several hours and then disappeared.

In 2019, Shukhrat Ganiev became famous for the phrase after reading a post by an unnamed online activist: “When officials read a memorial prayer to the blogger who wrote about the protests.”

As the press service of the supervisory agency then reported, on December 2, 2019, during a meeting, the khokim of the Fergana region, Shukhrat Ganiev, really used some rude language and insults. At the same time, being guided by the Criminal Procedure Code, the prosecutors did not see a real threat to human life.
