Kazakhstan: official stole a million dollars allocated to develop a strategic map

The Agency for Combating Corruption made public other facts about exposing the bribe-takers.

So, according to Askhat Zhumagali, head of the Department of the Shymkent City Agency, 34 corrupt officials have been exposed in the region since the beginning of the year, about 30 of them were convicted. At the same time, which is quite indicative, 20% of the number of convicts are former (now) heads of structural divisions of state bodies.

So, for example, state inspector Arapov was sentenced to six years in prison, who during the period of the state of emergency in the country took bribes from entrepreneurs so that they could freely trade food in bazaars and markets in Shymkent.

The deputy head of the Department of Culture, Development of Languages and Archives of the city of Shymkent Yeltay Umbet, who received a bribe with a water filter, also appeared in the dock.

Besides, the other day the head of the department of the internal state audit was detained, who received $ 15 thousand for hiring an employee and the head of the analysis office of the department for protection and development of competition – for a bribe of $ 1200 for making a positive decision on an administrative offense.

According to Askhat Zhumagali, another high-profile case is now in the proceedings of the Shymkent Anti-Corruption Department – about the theft of more than one million dollars. This money, according to the anti-corruption fighter, was allocated to compile a topographic map of Shymkent.

“This map is of strategic importance when planning construction in a metropolis. However, the official stole the allocated money. As a result, the topographic map compiled under his supervision is not suitable for use, – explained Zhumagali.

He also added that the anti-corruption department identified crimes in the implementation of state programs such as Digital Kazakhstan, Health, and the Nurly Zhol regional development program. As a result of the measures taken, the anti-corruption fighters managed to compensate for these crimes in the amount of $ 4.2 million.
