Tajikistan: date of the scheduled presidential election is illegal

The next presidential elections in Tajikistan will be held on October 11. The opposition considers this decision to be absolutely illegal.

On August 6, at a joint session of both houses of Parliament, it was decided that the presidential elections would take place on October 11.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Social Democratic Party Rakhmatillo Zoyirov said that the elections scheduled for October 11 are illegal. The reason Zoyirov noted is the fact that the elections will be held a month before the end of the powers of the current president.

“The chairpersons of both chambers should be punished for this,” the politician stressed, urging the Constitutional Court and the General Prosecutor’s Office to give a legal assessment of this decision.

Recall that the speaker of the upper house of Parliament is Rustali Emomali, the son of the incumbent president and, in fact, the second person of the state. According to several experts, one of the presidential candidates is exactly Rustami Emomali. However, the main candidate is still the incumbent President Emomali Rahmon, who has been ruling the country for almost 28 years. Over the years, he changed the laws for himself several times, which allowed him to remain in power without restrictions.

As an expert from Tajikistan notes, the current president’s rating is very low due to the situation with COVID-19.

“The inaction and lies on the part of the authorities during the coronavirus pandemic, as a result of which a huge number of people died, significantly reduced people’s confidence in the authorities,” the expert notes. “However, the main thing is total corruption, which is headed by the president himself and his family, every day seizing business from the citizens and plundering the country’s budget. I think that to ensure the required number of votes, the authorities need to work hard, so when counting the votes, there will be huge falsifications as usual “.

Practically all elections in Tajikistan, according to international observers, were not democratic, transparent, and did not meet international standards.
