Human rights activist Azimzhan Askarov, sentenced to life in prison, is sick. He receives treatment at the place of detention. This was reported by the Office of the Ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan.
On the morning of July 16, on behalf of Ombudsman Tokon Mamytov, the staff of the specialized department made a trip to the institution No. 19 of the State Penitentiary Service to meet with Azimzhan Askarov, sentenced to life imprisonment, and to talk with him about his health condition.
“During a meeting with an employee of the Ombudsman’s Office, Azimzhan Askarov confirmed that he had a fever of 38.5 ℃ for several days. He also has joint pain and lack of appetite, ”the ombudsman explained.
Upon re-examination, the state of the human rights defender turned out to be satisfactory.
“Doctors of penal colony No. 19 are taking all the necessary measures to improve Askarov’s condition. The human rights activist receives intravenous glucose, vitamins via drip, a lytic mixture to relieve fever, as well as appropriate symptomatic treatment, ”the Ombudsman’s Office said.
At the same time, according to the head of the medical unit of colony No. 19 Kurmanaliev, they do not have modern equipment for examining patients, and they do not have enough necessary medicines. Also, convicts are not tested for COVID-19.
“There are no grounds for conducting PCR analysis, since the prisoners have no contact with anyone, they are in cells, and the staff of the institution periodically take tests,” Kurmanaliev said.
Let us remind you that Azimzhan Askarov is accused of inciting ethnic hatred and the murder of a policeman during the June 2010 events in the south of Kyrgyzstan. He was found guilty under the article “Complicity in murder” of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan and sentenced to life imprisonment.
