Kazakhstan: convicts will be allowed visits only after quarantine

For more than three months, Kazakh convicts haven’t seen their relatives. The reason for the ban on dates was the coronavirus pandemic, due to which the country was first introduced a state of emergency, and then quarantine.

The relaxation of quarantine, which is now observed for free citizens, doesn’t apply to convicts. According to Interior Minister Erlan Turgumbaev, prisoners can count on dates only after quarantine.

“In connection with quarantine measures, all visits were canceled, but at the same time, the number of telephone conversations wasn’t limited, the transfer of belongings, as well as food. When quarantine measures are completed, we will allow all relatives to visit convicts,” Turgumbaev said during an online briefing. He has also added that quarantine will remain in effect until the threat of the spread of the coronavirus disappears.

He also said that, in the near future, it is planned to expand the list of products produced in Kazakh colonies.

Today, according to the Minister, in the republic’s correctional facilities, convicts make furniture, metal, leather, wooden and plastic products; uniform for law enforcement officers is also sewn there.

“We plan to expand the area of production activity in the colonies. Recently, we talked with all our large manufacturing enterprises to place their orders in our premises. Firstly, it’s cheaper, and secondly, it attracts our convicts to work and make money,” the Interior Minister explained.
