In Uzbekistan, patients of psychiatric hospital are exposed to violence

It became known about the violence in the female psychiatric hospital in Kashkadarya region. According to Telegram channel Context.uz of the feminist activist and journalist Irina Matvienko, in the women’s psychiatric hospital (known among the population as “Aurora”) in Karshi district, a punitive cell is operating. Men of hospital staff mock at patients.

According to the channel source, the institution practices rape. As a result of repeated sexual acts, women with mental disorders become pregnant, and the administration of the medical institution hides this.

Information spread on a social network. One of the users confirmed it in his post. He writes about regular beatings of patients with batons by male hospital attendants. “Women, who are usually unable to control themselves, are forced to have sex regularly and even have more than one child. Of course, workers and managers are not afraid of sin. There are facts, accomplices are nurses in hospitals,” says the user.

In response to such serious allegations, the regional health department issued the statement, which was published by an Uzbek online publication. Officials believe that the opinions, expressed in the post, are completely unfounded. They consider the strongest exculpatory argument that “seven months ago, according to the order of the head of the regional health department (dated October 14, 2019), the new building of the regional psychiatric hospital with 190 beds, located at 85, Islam Karimov street, Karshi, was completely relocated”.

Uzbek feminist and journalist Irina Matvienko has no doubt that in the case of any proceedings, they will trust the staff. “I have no doubt that among the doctors of the clinics there are people who help patients and don’t abuse their position. I believe that they are the majority. However, I concede that cases, that an anonymous user wrote about, can be. Especially if men are allowed to the patients. They, like some of their brothers, are sure that woman is not a human, or are convinced that they have the right to sex without caring about the woman’s mutual desire. Wanted – took it. What’s wrong with that?” the journalist wrote.

The Health Department didn’t specify whether men work at the institution or not, but there is confirmation of this in last year’s post of the online publication Daryo.uz.
