Kyrgyzstan: ex-PM’s spouse is suspected of money laundering

Asel Shadieva, the wife of First Deputy Prime Minister Askarbek Shadiev, who fled from Kyrgyzstan, is suspected of money laundering. This was reported by the State Committee for National Security of the republic.

The State Committee for National Security is currently investigating a criminal case on suspicion of Askarbek Shadiev of money laundering committed in collusion with individuals.

“It was established that from 2010 to 2017, Askarbek Shadiev, in order to conceal the criminal source of the origin of the property, gave a legitimate form of these incomes, having drawn up the property in the name of his wife Asel Shadieva. Moreover, the actual assets, owned by them, and the income from them significantly exceed the amounts indicated in the Tax declaration of the Kyrgyz Republic,” the State Committee said.

The State Committee for National Security emphasizes that the materials, collected in the case, testify the complicity of Asel Shadieva in the commission of the crime. In particular, according to investigators, it is related to the laundering of criminal incomes.

“The investigation gave an appropriate legal assessment concerning her actions. According to article 18 of part 1 of the Criminal Procedure Code, criminal proceedings are carried out on the basis of equality and adversary nature of the parties. In this regard, it would be reasonable if Asel Shadieva provided the available evidence in the established manner and gave relevant explanations on the merits of the case, as required by law,” the State Committee for National Security concluded.

Recall that in April 2018, a criminal case was opened against First Deputy Prime Minister Askarbek Shadiev under article 304 “Abuse of official position” of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic. The reason was another criminal case on the appropriation of $27 000 (two million KGS) by the head of the department of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security, Arsen Zakirov, on the basis of the letter signed by Shadiev.

On December 25, 2018, Pervomaisky District court of Bishkek convicted Askarbek Shadiev of the first two articles and sentenced him to 10 years in prison in his absence. The police failed to arrest the former Deputy Prime Minister. He fled from the country to the USA.
