Uzbekistan: the President’s son-in-law was accused of appropriating property of Gulnara Karimova

The Uzbek media ignored the appeal of Islam Karimov Jr. to the President Mirziyoev listing all that had been taken from his mother, Gulnara Karimova. The conspiracy of silence is due to the fact that the leader of Uzbekistan, in fact, was accused of picking the loot.

The grandson of the late President brought an extensive list of assets of Gulnara Karimova. For the first time, the population of the country knew in detail what she had before her detention. The whole business empire has now passed into the hands of a group of people, among whom Islam names the younger son-in-law of Mirziyoev, Otabek Umarov, who holds the post of deputy head of the President’s Security service. He is charged with the appropriation of a villa and a complex of buildings near the Charvak reservoir. Officially, this is the training base of the Triathlon Federation, which is headed by Otabek. Last year, in accordance with the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers, $ 1.7 million were allocated for provision of the necessary facilities there.

“By mentioning the name of the son-in-law, Islam attacks the President himself, in respect of whom he holds forth hypocritically,” the ACCA expert comments. “This is actually the last warning, after which we should expect direct allegations of corruption and evidence of raiding.”

Gulnara Karimova, who was imprisoned, said that she had given everything up and was counting on lenience. The Ministry of Finance has denied her statement. The budget didn’t receive anything after the confiscation of her property inside the country, the value of which is more than $ 1.2 billion. These included medical centers, cinemas, 98 apartments and construction sites in the center of Tashkent, chain stores with distribution of world brands, various companies, stocks of trading networks, etc.

“All these assets and property fell into the control of unknown owners. The question remains open, why the state didn’t dare to transparency in the implementation of confiscated property and indifferently looked at the change of ownership. It turns out that the country was robbed twice. First, Gulnara with her stooges, and then some businessmen with the highest permission,” said the ACCA expert.

Reliable data and specific names of the new owners, Islam Karimov doesn’t cite. He writes that “according to our father M. Maksudi, our Coca-Cola family business in Uzbekistan, worth hundreds of millions US dollars, has also been taken over by your son-in-law”. However, it wasn’t specified, whom of the two he talked about.

“Existing open databases don’t allow identifying new owners of Gulnara’s former assets. The inaction of the state allowed the creation of a new community of very rich people. Currently, more than ten criminal cases are under consideration. Foreign partners are in no hurry to return funds from frozen accounts and finally decide the fate of elite real estate,” said the ACCA expert. “In a period of pandemic, authorities in communication with Western jurisprudence will find new arguments for a quick return of stolen by Gulnara. Judging by how they treated her property inside the country, the fate of the returned assets is decided beforehand.”
