Tajikistan: Emomali Rahmon prepares his son for his post

In the near future, Rustami Emomali may become the second person of the state, and eventually replace his father, the current President.

Today, the capital’s deputies unanimously voted for Rustami Emomali, whose candidacy was proposed as a member of the upper house of the Parliament of Tajikistan.

Recall that Rustami Emomali is the mayor of the capital of Tajikistan, and in 2017, he was elected as a deputy of the capital’s Duma.

ACCA’s expert from Tajikistan expressed confidence that the President’s son will be elected as the speaker of the upper house of the Parliament. “Everything goes to the fact that Rustam will officially become the second person of the state, and over time will replace his father,” the expert notes. “Emomali Rahmon wants to follow the path of Kazakhstan, and organize a smooth transition of power to his son.”

“Rustam’s candidacy for the presidency has been discussed for many years, but many analysts don’t see him as president, because he is very weak as a politician, and he does not have oratory skills, which is very important for the head of state,” the expert emphasizes. “As far as I know, Moscow also opposes Rustam’s candidacy for the presidency. They need guarantees to preserve the Russian military base in Tajikistan. Therefore, Rahmon decided to take the path of a gradual transition of power, so that Rustam has time to get experience under the guidance of his father.”

According to the article 71 of the Constitution of Tajikistan, in case of the resignation, recognition of incompetence or the death of the president, until the newly elected president takes his post, his duties are transferred to the chairman of the upper house of the Parliament.
