Uzbekistan: video blogger was arrested in Andijan region

In Andijan region, the blogger, Jurabek Kimizov, is accused of theft, which he allegedly committed two years ago. At the same time, local law enforcement authorities attribute to him several more similar criminal episodes. The blogger’s wife, Asilzoda Kholmirzaeva, is sure that the arrest of her husband is related to critical materials in the video blog of Adolat TV.

According to available information, the blogger was summoned on February 26 to the police department of Pakhtaabad district of Andijan region. Someone wrote a belated statement, accusing Jurabek of theft. Previously, he was already waiting for interrogation, but the blogger works as a taxi driver, and he was not in the country. Now a criminal case has been instituted against him.

The problems of the network activist with the authorities began after last year’s video about the problems of two women with disabilities in Pakhtaabad. The blogger even sheltered one of them for several months. This caused indignation of the head of the district administration, Mahmujon Bozorov.

According to Umid Bobomatov, journalist of the Uzbek service of Radio Liberty, on March 5, there was a search in the house of Kimizov. “It is not clear what they are looking for, but the children and wife are frightened to death,” the journalist noted. “Most likely they just want to shut up. As I understand it, the authorities of Andijan decided to shoot the works. They have nowhere to retreat. The case has begun, and they said a lot.”

There is no reaction from the leadership of the recently created Public Foundation for the Support and Development of National Media to the arrest of the blogger. The Foundation is actively positioning itself as a defender of bloggers and journalists.

Chairman of the board of trustees of the Public Foundation, Komil Allamjonov, and his deputy Saida Mirziyoeva, daughter of the President of the country, earlier also ignored the beating of blogger Otabek Nuritdinov. On February 18, he was attacked. The owners of a drinking establishment came to deal with him for the post on a social network concerning the sale of alcohol near the mosque in Asakinsky district of Andijan region.
