Uzbekistan: blogger was beaten in Andijan region

The blogger, Otabek Nuritdinov, was attacked on February 18. The store owners came to clear the air with him for a post on a social network concerning sale of alcohol near the Khalid ibn al-Walid mosque in Asakinsky district of Andijan region. His mouth was torn and he was hard beaten.

Outraged by the publication, the woman and her two sons decided to teach the blogger by fists. One of them attacked Otabek and began to beat. The damage was so serious that the doctors put him five stitches in the oral cavity and one on his face. At the insistence of the mother, Matluba Kurbanova, the Internet activist underwent a forensic examination to determine the severity of the beatings. In the police department of Andijan, the mother of the blogger was assured of the inevitable punishment of hooligans.

After the conversation of ACCA’s journalist with another Uzbek blogger, the picture of what happened became clear. As it turned out, neither the mother of the offenders, nor they themselves use Facebook. “In all likelihood, they were promptly informed of the publication by the law enforcement officers, who are responsible for monitoring social networks,” the blogger suggested. “There is no other way to explain from whom the attackers found Otabek’s mother’s number and promptly came to the house at the already known address.”

Earlier, ACCA published the material concerning the arrest of blogger Abdufatto Nuritdinov for 15 days (a pseudonym of Otabek Nuritdinov on the network). As the Regional Prosecutor’s office reported on December 30 last year, the resident of Andijan was punished for “slander, insult, and disorderly conduct”. Under two articles of the Administrative Code, he was also fined more than $1400 (1 238 000 Uzbek sums).

The reason for the prosecution of the blogger was more than 20 publications about corruption in the region from August to October last year. According to prosecutors, the “victims” and injured “citizens” were the head of Asakinsky district, the head of the regional department of public education, the director of the school in Asaka and the head of the local water organization, which the blogger allegedly insulted on December 30. The Prosecutor’s office informed that legal measures were taken after the oral appeal of officials.

According to the Prosecutor’s office, the blogger’s guilt was proved by publications and photos posted on the social network, as well as by some other evidence provided by the “victims”. The arrested blogger has 1039 followers on the social network.
