In Kyrgyzstan, journalist was taken under house arrest for criticizing authorities

The court chose a preventive measure in the form of two months of house arrest for the editor of the website “Pravda.kg” [“Chyndyk.kg’], Tursunbek Beishenbekov. According to the NGO “Journalists”, the case against the journalist may be related to critical publications addressed to Vice Prime Minister Zhenish Razakov.

According to some reports, the former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Kursan Asanov, may be involved in the publications. According to some media reports, Asanov handed over to Beishenbekov an explanatory note by Deputy Prime Minister, Zhenish Razakov, on involvement in Tajik special services.

Recall, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Kursan Asanov, was fired on August 13, 2019 with the wording “for betraying the interests of the Kyrgyz police” during the events in Koi-Tash. Later, the Military Prosecutor’s office launched an investigation. Asanov is suspected of abuse of power. Now, he is also under house arrest.

The journalist is suspected of complicity “in abuse of official position” (Article 320 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic), as well as “in a knowingly false report about the commission of a crime” (Article 344 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic).

“On January 16, Tursunbek Beishenbekov was summoned for interrogation by the Military Prosecutor’s office. On January 20, he was recalled again, after that he was taken to a temporary detention center,” the Public Association “Journalists” reports.

Later, according to the information of the Public Association, Beishenbekov said that the court chose a preventive measure in respect of him in the form of two months of house arrest. Despite this, the editor of “Pravda.kg” continues his journalistic activities.

“If everything is within the law, then I will be acquitted. I do not agree with the accusations that are being made to me. I continue to work for the site. I am just not allowed to leave the city, and it imposes certain restrictions on my professional activities,” Beishenbekov said.
