Uzbek human rights activists “seized” the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for 15 minutes

The press center of the Human Rights Alliance of Uzbekistan announced a “capture” of the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs for 15 minutes.

On Sunday, December 15, 2019, the leader of the Alliance, Elena Urlaeva, and her associates went into the building that was not guarded at that time. Taking advantage of the lack of security, they hanged posters with requirements for law enforcement agencies in a number of cases. The human rights activist herself reported this by calling the “alarm” numbers.

Task forces were able to enter the building only after finding the keys to the doors of the checkpoint. When they became convinced of a peaceful “capture”, the Ministry officials urgently examined five complaints of human rights defenders regarding the inaction of the Uzbek police.

Elena Urlaeva noted the inadmissibility of such a procedure for guarding the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Her colleagues from other human rights groups now allow tightening the conditions for admission to the Ministry on formal grounds. The organizers of the action are facing an administrative arrest.

It became known that in the district authorities of the Central Internal Affairs Directorate of the capital tightened control over the reception of visitors.

According to ACCA, a police investigation has now begun on the unauthorized access to a secret facility, which is usually followed by the dismissal of security officers.
