In Uzbekistan, men received maternity benefits

Almost $330 thousand profit was brought to corrupt officials by the scheme for the illegal payment of maternity benefits. This was reported by the departmental newspaper “Hukuk” [“Right”] under the Prosecutor General of Uzbekistan.

A check in budgetary organizations revealed ridiculous cases where men were not confused when receiving benefits for the birth of a child. With administration’s patronage, 2.1 million soums ($222) were paid to the economist of Jizakh Regional dermatovenereological dispensary, and 900 thousand (less than $100) were paid to the guard of school No.20 of Jizakh.

According to the publication, the damage of $116 000 “was compensated voluntarily, the rights of 30 citizens were restored”. In total for 2017–2018 and the first half-year of 2019, $56 million were paid as maternity benefits.

With the fight against corruption declared by the Uzbek authorities, punishments for billions of embezzlement in national currency are sparing for offenders. 202 people suffered disciplinary and administrative liability, only two were prosecuted.

The imperious vertical of corruption protection based on bribes from below remains unshakable. In the context of market reforms, the state is trying to change the situation with the help of international institutions, no longer hoping for its own governing bodies. On October 10, the Ministry of Justice did the presentation of a new project on the introduction of effective mechanisms and measures to combat corruption in justice bodies and institutions. KPMG, an authoritative world-class audit company, presented its vision.
