Kazakhstan authorities returned 595 citizens from Syria

The National Security Committee of Kazakhstan, together with other state bodies of the Republic, returned 595 Kazakh citizens from Syria, including over 400 children.

According to the NSC’s press service, 14 returnees were charged with involvement in terrorist activities, recruiting and propaganda of terrorism.

“They are charged with involvement in terrorist activities, recruitment and propaganda of terrorism. As well as committing other serious crimes,” said the official representative of the National Security Committee Arken Abdugali.

10 men and 5 women from among the returned persons have already been sentenced to various terms of imprisonment on the fact of participation in the activities of the Daish international terrorist organization, which is banned in Kazakhstan.

Returned citizens come from Nur-Sultan, Almaty city, as well as Almaty, Atyrau, West Kazakhstan, Aktobe, Akmola, Karaganda, Turkestan and Mangistau regions.

It should be noted that the return of Kazakh citizens from the war zone in Syria is part of the special humanitarian operation “Zhusan”, organized on behalf of the first President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbaev in early 2019. It should also be noted that the operations “Zhusan”, “Zhusan-2” and “Zhusan-3” were carried out as part of the program to combat religious extremism, for the implementation of which Kazakhstan allocated $1 billion.
